Historical Mural Program

The historical mural program of the Calgary Stampede’s Historical Committee strives to offer a glimpse of past Stampede events and their characters, as well as adding to the Park’s beautification program. Located throughout the Park, the eight murals are the result of a juried selection process open to all interested muralists. For a taste of the murals onsite, see our gallery below.

.

The north wall of the Big Four Building is home to the first mural (1996) by artist Stan Phelps. ‘Cyclone into the Sunset’ depicts Tom Three Persons’ Championship ride aboard Cyclone in 1912.

The Stampede LRT Station features a 1997 mural by artist Rocky Barstad, the theme of which is the 1950s entrance to Stampede Park and Indian Village/Suntree Park, which lay just inside the park gates.

The west wall of the Roundup Centre is enhanced by the Blue Skies above the depiction of the first Chuckwagon Races in 1923.The work by artist Rocky Barstad was completed in 1998 in honour of the 75th Anniversary of the Rangeland Derby.

The south upper wall of the Agriculture Building is home to a 1998 mural by Stan Phelps showing the early seed and hay exhibitions, which have been held since 1886.

The east wall of the Corral is the essence of the mural program. Artist Doug Driediger painted ‘The Dream’ in 1996 on the upper wall. It depicts Guy Weadick’s hopes for The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, while the lower wall takes you back to the 1912 and 1919 Stampede Parades showing teams of buffalo, Mounted Bands and Parade Marshall Cappy Smart. Artist Penny Corradine completed this mural in 1997.

The 1999 mural honoured the North West Mounted Police/RCMP with a depiction of the Musical Ride as it first appeared in Calgary in 1914. It is painted on the south wall of the Roundup Centre and was done by Keith Holmes.

For 2000, artist Keith Holmes created a mural commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1901 Bull Sale on the northwest corner of the Agriculture Building near the Saddledome.
